Once Upon A Time 2: A Happy Ending?

Having decided to make my modern day fairytale all about ‘The Little Mermaid’, I have now decided upon a story that I feel is worth continuing and developing even more. An image that has certainly helped me to create the story is the one that was featured in the lecture last week. It shows a photographer’s view of what she thinks the famous Disney characters would be like in the modern day; The Little Mermaid was featured being sad and lonely in an aquarium. This got me thinking about an alternate story for the character of Ariel (aka the little mermaid).

The image above also helped me to think of a story involving the mermaid becoming trapped and forced into a life of being in a zoo of some sort or being in an aquarium and becoming something of a public attraction. It’s a story that I find to be full of opportunities.

The story I have in mind is focused more on what would happen if Eric was saved by Ariel and he saw a golden opportunity? That being money and trapping the mermaid into allowing him to make some extra cash. The mermaid becomes a circus freak and is forced into a life of people staring and paying to see her unusual state. Happy endings don’t always happen and it certainly won’t for this mermaid, not everything happens how you want it to! She won’t get her happy ending and Eric isn’t the prince charming that is normally expected.

It’s time to get real and REALLY think about what this story would be like in today’s world. It’s time to get rid of the typical happy ever after story and get real. The story of ‘The Little Mermaid’ wouldn’t be like what it was for Disney in the real world. I’m excited to see where this goes and also getting to the treatment part of this project.
